BLE holds Zumba dance workout

12 May 2022 – The Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) Employee Welfare Team (EWT) launches its Zumba dance workout to promote work-life balance in the office and encourage personnel to be more physically active.

Minimum public health standards were strictly observed during the conduct of the Zumba dance workout to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

BLE personnel are susceptible to a sedentary lifestyle considering the nature of work that involves data processing, deskwork, and virtual or face-to-face meetings. Research suggests that remaining seated for a prolonged period poses health risks such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Therefore, a 15-minute exercise is beneficial to break the cycle and keep the blood flowing.

Aside from weight loss, studies show that Zumba can help lower the risk of heart disease, reduce blood pressure and bad cholesterol, and boost good cholesterol. It also helps relieve stress by turning the attention away from the office task.

Further, exercise is proven effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and enhancing overall cognitive function, all of which may lead to higher productivity at work.

Considering all these perceived benefits, the BLE intends to continue the holding of similar activities as part not only of the welfare program, but of occupational health and gender and development program as well.
